Hi, I’m Tom Woody, Founding Editor and Expert Generator

I started this website because I have 15+ years of combined experience as a mechanical engineer and hands-on power systems specialist, designing, installing, and maintaining industrial generator systems across large-scale commercial and industrial projects in the United States.

I earned my mechanical engineering background through formal training in the U.S. and went on to work on the design and construction of high-capacity backup and prime power generator systems for industrial facilities. These projects included diesel generators, electrical distribution systems, load management, fuel systems, and auxiliary components. Many of these installations exceeded a million dollars in total cost when accounting for equipment, electrical infrastructure, civil works, and labor.

The generator systems were deployed at industrial sites and commercial facilities where continuous and reliable power was critical. They supported offices, workshops, vehicle maintenance areas, control rooms, and essential infrastructure. Some systems operated as standby power, while others ran continuously under heavy and variable electrical loads.

Over the years, I spent a significant amount of time researching generator specifications, working closely with manufacturers, suppliers, and electrical contractors, and evaluating systems in real-world operating conditions. This experience gave me a strong technical understanding of generator sizing, load behavior, fuel efficiency, maintenance requirements, and long-term reliability.

In addition to my engineering work, I also spent more than 3 years working directly in industrial environments where I was responsible for the daily operation and routine maintenance of diesel generator systems. These generators powered critical equipment and facilities, giving me hands-on experience with their performance, limitations, and maintenance needs.

Over time, I developed a strong interest in generators beyond large industrial systems. I started this website to expand my knowledge into residential and light commercial generators. For the past 7+ years, I have focused on buying, testing, comparing, and reviewing residential generator units and sharing what I’ve learned with homeowners, contractors, and small businesses.

There is no better way to learn than to test, research, and review equipment in real-world conditions. You can learn more about our evaluation process by visiting our How We Test guide.

Why Is It Called “PopularGenerator.com”?

I wanted a name that clearly related to generators and backup power, while still being simple and easy to remember. Many obvious domain options were already taken, especially shorter or more generic names.

PopularGenerator.com was available and felt like a good fit. The name reflects what the site is about, commonly used generators, real-world recommendations, and practical information people actually search for. It is straightforward, easy to recognize, and works well as the site continues to grow.

Sometimes the simplest option is the best one.
